Product Innovation Ltd invented the Tilt Switch in response to the increasing need to replace mercury in similar types of products. It works on a very simple basis of light from an LED being directed through a small hole at the apex of an inverted cone. A small ball rests in the apex of the cone, obstructing the light from the LED. When the switch is tilted more than the angle of the cone the ball moves and the light from the LED reaches a light sensitive receiver, which then turns on. The sensor is licensed to Astralux Dynamics Ltd of Brightlingsee, England.
